New York American Viticultural Areas for Wine Tasting
Currently New York has nine official American Viticultural Area.
These wine regions are a great place to start when you're looking
to visit New York wineries
for wine tasting and winery tours.
Finger Lakes AVA
Designated AVA in 1982 and located in Upstate New York,
south of Lake Ontario in the areas glacial lakes.
Cayuga Lake AVA
Designated AVA in 1988, located around Cayuga Lake in Upstate
New York and completely encompassed within the larger, Finger Lakes
AVA.
Seneca Lake AVA
Designated AVA 1988 and located around Seneca Lake in Upstate
New York and completely encompassed within the larger, Finger Lakes
AVA.
Hudson River Region
AVA
Designated AVA in 1982, located near the Hudson River in
Eastern New York, and home to the oldest, continuously operating
winery, in North America.
Lake Erie AVA
Designated AVA in 1983 and located in Southwestern New
York, Northwestern Pennsylvania, and Northeastern Ohio along the
southern shores of Lake Erie.
Long Island AVA
Designated AVA in 2001 and located in Nassau and Suffolk
counties and also includes the smaller offshore islands in those
counties.
Niagara Escarpment
AVA
Designated AVA in 2005 and located in Northwestern New
York along the Canadian border.
North Fork of Long
Island AVA
Designated AVA in 1988 and located in eastern Suffolk County,
including the entire North Fork of Long Island and the townships
of Riverhead, Shelter Island, and Southold.
The Hamptons, Long
Island AVA
Designated AVA in 1988 and located entirely within eastern
Suffolk County, including the entire South Fork of Long Island and
the townships of Southampton and East Hampton.
