Travel Oregon Wine Trails
As the thrid largest producer of wine in the US, Oregon boasts
more than 300 wineries and 16 American Viticultural Areas (Regions)
within its borders. With one exception, The Applegate Wine Trail,
those wine enthusiasts looking to travel Oregon "Wine Trails"
should look to the wine regions of the state to travel around and
visit OR wineries. In any of these sixteen wine regions, you can't
take a step without practically tripping over dozens of great wineries
and vineyards. We at Wine Bar Wineries, recommend that visitors
grab a map and blaze their own Oregon wine trail, but please drink
responsibly. Here is a list of Oregon's wine regions and their general
locations.
Chehalem Mountains
AVA
Designated AVA in 2006 and located in Northwestern Oregon,
stretching 20 miles from Wilsonville to Forest Grove in the, and
entirely contained within the Willamette Valley AVA.

Columbia Gorge
AVA
Designated AVA in 2004 and located in the Columbia River
Gorge, along the border between Oregon and Washington.

Columbia Valley
AVA
Designated AVA in 1984 and located in central and northern
Oregon and parts of Washington.

Dundee Hills AVA
Designated AVA in 2004 and found entirely within the Willamette
Valley AVA, approximately 28 miles southwest of Portland, near the
town of Dundee.

Eola-Amity Hills
AVA
Designated AVA in 2006 and located between Amity, in the
north, to Salem in the south. It too is entirely contained within
the Willamette Valley AVA.

McMinnville AVA
Designated AVA in 2005 and located in Yamhill County, roughly
running between McMinnville and Sheridan. It is comprised of 6 wineries.

Red Hill Douglas
County AVA
Designated AVA in 2005 and located in Southwestern Oregon
near US Interstate 5 near the town of Yoncalla in Douglas County,
like many of Oregon's AVAs, it too is entirely contained within
the Umpqua Valley AVA, which is in turn within the larger Southern
Oregon AVA.

Ribbon Ridge AVA
Designated AVA in 2005 this AVA is Oregon's smallest AVA
and stretches between the towns of Newberg and Gaston, which are
just Southwest of Portland. This AVA is contained entirely within
the Chehalem Mountains AVA, which itself is entirely contained within
the much larger Willamette Valley AVA. There are approximatley 7
great wineries here.

Rogue Valley AVA
Designated AVA in 2000 and located in Southwestern Oregon
and is encompassed entirely within the larger Southern Oregon AVA.
There are approximaely 14 wineries here.

Snake River Valley
AVA
Designated AVA in 2007 and located mainly in Southwestern
Idaho, but extends into portions of Southeastern Oregon. This region
is home to more than 16 wineries.

Southern Oregon
AVA
Designated AVA in 2004 and located in Southwestern Oregon
and includes the Rogue Valley AVA and the Umpqua Valley AVA.

Umpqua Valley AVA
Designated AVA in 1984 and located entirely within the
Northeastern portion of the Southern Oregon AVA. There are about
20 wineries in this region.

Walla Walla Valley
AVA
Designated AVA in 1984 and located in the Northeastern
corner of Oregon and into Southeastern Washington. It is contained
entirely with the much larger, Colombia Valley AVA.

Willamette Valley
AVA
Designated AVA in 1984 and located in the Northwestern
portion of the the state reaching as far north as Portland and south
to Eugene. This larger region comprised of several smaller regions,
boasts more that 100 wineries.

Yamhill-Carlton
District AVA
Designated AVA in 2004 and located in Northwestern Oregon
and contained entirely within the Willamette Valley AVA. There are
approximataly 50 wineries within this region's borders.

Applegate Valley
AVA
Designated AVA in 2000 and located within the Rogue Valley
AVA around the town of Applegate in Southwestern Oregon. This AVA
is home to Oregon's fist winery. This is the only region that specifies
itself with a "Wine Trail" visiting 17 wineries on its
route.
