Texas Wine Regions
Texas American Viticultural Areas for Wine Tasting
Currently Texas has eight official American Viticultural Area.
These wine regions are a great place to start when you're looking
to visit Texas wineries for
wine tasting and winery tours.
Texas Davis Mountains AVA
Designated AVA in 1998 and located in the Trans-Pecos region
of West Texas and contains only one winery.
Texas High Plains
AVA
Designated AVA in 1993 and located in the Texas panhandle
with more than a half dozen wineries growing grapes within the region's
boundaries.
Texas Hill Country
AVA
Designated AVA in 1991 and this AVA is the second largest
in the US and is located just north of San Antonio and west of Austin.
Fredericksburg
in the Texas Hill Country AVA
Designated AVA in 1988 and located within the larger Texas
Hill Country AVA and surrounds the town of Fredericksburg.
Texoma AVA
Designated AVA in 2005 and located along the border with
the state of Oklahoma in North Central Texas on the southern side
of Lake Texoma.
Bell Mountain AVA
Designated AVA in 1986, this region was the first AVA entirely
within the state of Texas. It is centrally located in Gillespie
County.
Escondido Valley
AVA
Designated AVA in 1992 and located in Pecos County. Although
there are grapes grown in this region, there are no wineries lacated
within its borders.
Mesilla Valley
AVA
Designated AVA in 1985 and located mainly in New Mexico
but with a small portion of the region falling within the Texas
border.
